The source of the word amateur is amator or lover. The Merriam definition is horrible,

1. 1 : devotee, admirer

2. 2 : one who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession

3. 3 : one lacking in experience and competence in an art or science

There's no real hint that an amateur might actually be more committed than a "professional" So as often happens generalization rule, subtleties are lost and amateurs are non-professional hacks, sigh.
